How to Get Involved and Give Back at USES

We love our volunteers. They are passionate and dedicated and help us elevate the members of our South End and Lower Roxbury community.

Adult Basic Education (ABE) Tutor

Provide adult learners with one-on-one support in subjects such as basic math, reading, and writing as they prepare for the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET).

Time Commitment
Students are available for tutoring outside of class-time Friday mornings and weekday afternoons (commitment of 1-3 hours/week). Classes meet Monday-Thursday 9:15am-2:15pm and Tuesday/Thursday 5:30pm-8:30pm. Opportunities to volunteer as an in-class assistant exist as well.

Qualifications
Understanding of specific academic subject matter; compassion and patience when working with diverse populations; some experience in teaching and/or tutoring preferred.

ESOL Tutor

Provide adult English Language Learners with one-on-one support in reading, writing, conversation, and pronunciation.

Time Commitment
Students are available for tutoring on Monday mornings and weekday afternoons (commitment of 1-3 hours/week)

Qualifications
Mastery of English language. Compassion and patience when working with diverse populations; some experience in teaching and/or tutoring ESOL preferred.

After School Classroom Assistant

Engage with children ages 5-12, help with homework, assist in planning group activities.

Time Commitment
Monday-Friday 2:30pm-6:00pm (commitment 2+ hours, one afternoon/week)

Qualifications
Some experience working with children ages 5-12 preferred; ability to lead activities preferred.

Early Childhood Classroom Assistant

Engage with children ages 0-5 and assist with supervision and planning of activities. 

Time Commitment
Monday-Friday 10:00am-12:00pm or 3:oopm-5:00pm (commitment 2+ hours/week)

Qualifications
Some experience working with children ages 0-5 preferred; ability to lead activities preferred

Senior Services Computer Class Assistant

Help seniors learn the basics of Microsoft programs, design monthly calendars and personal cards, create presentations and more. 

Time Commitment
Mondays and Fridays, 1:30-3:00pm (class runs from May 11 – July 31)

Qualifications
Working knowledge of computers and Microsoft programs, compassion and patience in working with the elderly; teaching experience preferred.

We are always looking for people to join our board of directors and/or board committees (Fundraising, Finance, Program, Real Estate) – to help us be a strong and growing organization.
