1. Making Sun Catchers

Description: Make your very own Earth-themed sun catchers using items from your kitchen! For this activity, you will need: coffee filters, food coloring, clear zip-lock bags, string, water, and tape. You can use other types of colored paper with different colors, and textures to make your sun catcher more exciting!

2. Make Your Own Volcano

Teacher: Ms. Ana

Description: Have you ever wanted to make your very own volcano right at home? Now you can! This activity is a great science experiment that not only consists of sensory exploration, but also helps develop scientific method skills in children! For this experiment, you will need: flour, measuring cups, mixing bowl, salt, water, oil, mixing spoon, water bottle, baking soda, dish soap, food coloring, and vinegar. As a warning, this science experiment does get messy!

3. Creative Scribbles

Teacher: Ms. Ana

Description: Listen to instrumental music and make your own creative scribbles. This activity is not only relaxing, but can also help improve fine motor skills. As a bonus, you can cut out shapes and place it on colored paper.

Ages: 1-3, 3-5

4. Milk Art

Teacher: Ms. Ana

Description: Create your own milk art in a fun, and engaging science experiment with items from your kitchen! For the activity, you pour milk into a container, add some food coloring, then add some dish soap into the middle, and see what happens! As an extra bonus, use a Q-Tip, dip it into the soap, then into the milk with the food coloring and see what happens! For this activity, you will need: milk, food coloring, and dish soap.

5. Oil, Water, and Food Coloring Experiment

Teacher: Ms. Ana

Description: Let’s find out what happens when you mix water, food coloring, and oil together in a clear cup or bowl. What do you think will happen? Make some predictions before adding them all together.

6. Marshmallow Sculpture

Description: Build your own marshmallow sculpture using forks, straws, or any items you have around the house!

8. Bird Feeders

Description: Make your very own bird feeder at home! After making your bird feeder, you can hang it from a tree and see how many birds come to visit.

For this craft, you will need: paper towel/toilet paper roll, sticks/branches, string, peanut butter or honey, sunflower seeds and/or corn.

9. Coffee Playdoh

Description: Children love Playdough. It creates a fun sensory play experience that allows you to make shapes, build, and work on essential fine motor skills. Instead of buying it from the store, you can make your very own right at home.

For this activity, you will need: flour, salt, instant coffee, and water.

Ages: 0-1, 1-3, 3-5

10. Making Your Own Raft

Teacher: Ms Taniya

Description: Build a raft using straws and count how many coins you can balance on it. I could balance 4, and it began to sank when I added the 5th coin. See if you can balance more coins than I did!

Ages: 3-5

11. Ice Tower

Teacher: Ms. Taniya

Description: Ice balancing STEAM challenge. Try to balance ice cubes one on top of the other. Sprinkle salt to melt the ice, and press another ice cube on top to build an ice tower! Challenge: How many ice cubes can YOU balance?

12. Make Your Own Paint

Teacher: Ms. Jules

Description: Create paint with materials in your kitchen! This activity is geared towards school-aged children (5-12) but families of younger children can create the paint with or for their children to enjoy.

Materials: water, flour (can substitute almond flour), salt, food coloring (substitute liquid water color if needed)

Instructions: Mix water and flour until you get the consistency that you’d like. Separate the mixture into bowls and add food coloring. I prefer using the primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) so that children can practice experimenting with color mixing.

Ages: 5-12 (0-4 with adult support)

13. Homemade Play Doh

Teacher: Ms. Jules

Description: Follow along with this classic art project and create playdoh in your kitchen! Use this recipe as a sensory activity or (with adult supervision) bake the dough in the oven for a lasting work of art.

Materials: Flour, Salt, Water, paint (optional)

Process: Mix water, salt, flour until you get a doughy consistency. Preheat oven to 350°F if you want to save the shape of your creation and paint it. Otherwise, use playdoh as a sensory tool and store in Tupperware in the fridge for repeated use.

Ages: 5-12 (0-4 with adult support)

14. Paper Maché

Teacher: Ms. Jules

Description: Paper Maché is another classic method of creating 3-dimensional works of art. Here is a basic recipe that

Materials: Flour, Salt, Water, recycled paper, paint (optional)

Process: Mix water, salt, flour. Follow along in the video for precise ratios. Cut strips of recycled paper. Wet paper in mixture and layer it around a sturdy object. Let it dry for about a day before removing and/or painting. In this video we make a small pot that can be used to start seedings before transferring them outside or to a larger pot.

Ages: 5-12 

15. Making Collages

Teacher: Ms. Jules

Description: Join Miss Jules and guest star Miss Emma as they share their different artistic processes in creating the same thing—collages! This project is versatile and with modifications can be appropriate for any age.

Materials: magazines, paper, recycled paper, any material that can be modified for a 2-D format (yarn, photographs, leaves, etc.), scissors, blank paper, glue (or glue substitute—see video for instructions)

Process: Cut or rip paper or magazines into shapes and images that you find interesting or relevant if your collage has a theme. Arrange and glue pieces on a sturdy piece of paper or carboard and add layers as you see fit.

Ages: 5-12 (0-4 with modifications and adult support)
