10 New Year’s Resolution Ideas from USES

10 New Year's Resolution Ideas from USES

Charlotte Goff, Volunteer Coordinator

2015 has come and gone. 2016 is here. It’s time to come up with some meaningful goals for self-improvement. We can’t help you with all your resolutions (you really should floss more, by the way,) but we have some great ideas for you. Here are ten ways that you can fulfill your New Year’s resolutions with USES.

Connect to Your Community...

Attend a Harriet Tubman Gallery Opening

Join your neighbors and attend the many engaging and thought-provoking Harriet Tubman Gallery openings throughout the year. Next up is The Theresa Show, a fiber arts exhibit and silent auction to benefit the Theresa-India Young Ethnic Weaving Scholarship on January 15. Learn more here.

Lend a Hand to Hungry Neighbors

In partnership with the Greater Boston Food Bank, the Commodity Supplemental Food Program works to improve the health of low-income individuals 60 years of age and older by supplementing their diets with 35lbs of groceries each month. For more info on how to get involved, contact me, Charlotte, at cgoff@uses.org.

Take a Walking Tour with Your Neighbors

See the South End from a whole new perspective. Once a month from May to September, USES' Neighborhood Walks takes you on a guided tour exploring the history, architecture, public art, culture, and more of our neighborhood. To learn more or even suggest your own topic, email Evan at egray@uses.org.

Improve You and Your Family’s Health and Wellness...

Sign Up for Tai Chi, Jazzercise, or Yoga Class

Our Senior Services Program offers a wide range of classes that will improve your mind, body, and soul. There are tons of ways to get active, improve your wellbeing, and have fun! To learn more, email Clara at cgarcia@uses.org or click here.

Give Your Child a Camp Experience

Each summer, 180 young men and women ages 6 to 14 years old trade the Boston streets for lakeside cabins in the heart of the White Mountains, located on Squam Lake in New Hampshire. Learn more here.

Learn and Grow...

Sign Your Little Picasso Up for Vacation Arts

School vacation will be here before you know it. We’d love to have your child with us to create art, build connections, get messy, and have fun! Learn more and sign up here.

Enroll in Our Adult Education Program

USES' Workforce Readiness program offers HiSET (formerly GED), Microsoft Digital Literacy, Home Health Aide Training, Career Counseling, and Job Placement programs to ensure that our neighbors have the education and opportunities they need to move toward economic self-sufficiency. Learn more here.

Sign Up for Senior Computer Classes

Our Senior Services program offers both beginner and advanced computer classes to build your technology knowledge. Sign up to develop new skills in a friendly environment. Contact Clara at cgarcia@uses.org or (617) 375-8163.

Help Others Learn and Grow...

Tutor an Adult Education Student

One of the most effective and gratifying ways to learn is to teach! Spend time tutoring adult students working towards their HiSET (High School Equivalency Test). Click here for more info.

Join the Spanish Club

All USES families are invited to join the After School Program’s Spanish Club. Volunteer to tutor or come by for Spanish homework help and conversation con amigos every Monday from 6:00 - 7:00pm beginning January 25. Email Kasey at kblume@uses.org to learn more.

Give to Others

Start the year off by making a difference in the education, health, safety and economic security of low-income individuals and families in the South End/Lower Roxbury neighborhood. You can make an online contribution here or purchase an item off our In-Kind Wish List on Amazon.com here.
