United South End Settlements (USES) was recognized as a historical site by the Everyone250 Coalition, a partnership across Boston's arts and culture sector. The mission of the Everyone250 Coalition is to reimagine how history is told and who gets to tell it through community storytelling, immersive events, and public activations. As one of several historic sites across Boston, USES was honored on Friday, February 27 with a ceremony to unveil the temporary plaque that will be installed on the building to designate it as a historical site.
The event had several speakers including USES CEO, Jerrell Cox, Embrace Boston CEO, Imari Paris Jefferies, State Senator Liz Miranda, State Representative, John Moran, and more. The event centered around USES' over 130 years of history in the city of Boston. The organization was founded in 1892 as a settlement house, one of the first in the country. From the beginning the work has centered around bringing together community to uplift one another and create positive change in the neighborhood and beyond. The organization has stood alongside families navigating change, hardship, and hope. Across racial and socioeconomic lines, USES ensures that the children they serve are safe, the families have access to opportunity, and that neighbors can build social capital strong enough to sustain a community.
