Mixing Colors = Mezclando Colores

The Hurley School first graders are working hard on their Eric Carle-inspired collage project! Before students make their own painted papers to use in their collages, we spend a class just exploring colors and how to mix them. First graders are just beginning to understand the rules of color mixing (Blue with yellow makes what? Green!), which gives this lesson such a feeling of discovery.

Students approach their color mixing with the intense focus of scientists. As they mix their colors, they test their ideas and share their discoveries. "What will happen if I add more blue to this purple?" "How can I make the color of my skin?" Students practice identifying cause and effect, a skill they also practice in reading comprehension and science.

Stay tuned to see the final collages!
