CAC Teen Portfolio

USES' Teen Portfolio program was launched at the CAC in 1995 and has since helped 100% of its high school seniors gain admittance to art schools and colleges. The class offers Boston area high school youth the opportunity to work with professional artists in a relaxed yet disciplined setting. Young artists are exposed to the many viable career paths in the field of visual arts. They are encouraged to embrace higher learning and to seek opportunities to share their work with the public. The class aims to expand student's knowledge and practice in the visual arts and to guide them in creating portfolios for art school/college applications.
The specific goals of the Teen Portfolio class are the following:
• Provide structure and guidance to high school students with a strong interest in visual arts
• Develop professional skills through exposure to diverse media and techniques
• Provide a personalized program of creative projects based on each student's skills and interests.
• Help each participant work on original pieces worthy of inclusion in a professional portfolio
• Facilitate student entrance into local and state-wide art competitions and exhibits
• Provide exposure to local art resources such as galleries, artist studios and museums
Additionally, high school seniors in the program receive personalized assistance in reviewing colleges and art schools, crafting entrance essays, completing application forms and preparing slides for an art portfolio.
This year the Teen Portfolio class will be held on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 7:00 throughout the school year and will follow the Boston Public School calendar of holidays and vacations. A snack will be provided each week. All Boston Public School students may attend this program for free.
Instructor: Chelsea is the coordinator of the Children's Art Centre as well as a working artist with experience in a variety of disciplines including mixed media, illustration, and assemblage. She is a graduate from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design with a degree in Illustration.
The curriculum is developed in support of state and national arts standards, while providing a source of extracurricular instruction for students whose schools lack art programs. The 2009-2010 Teen Portfolio curriculum will include: charcoal and graphite drawing, perspective and technical drawing skills, life drawing, portraiture, color study, and acrylic painting techniques, printmaking, mixed media, conceptual illustration, graphic design sculpture and three-dimensional design.
