Children's Art Centre

USES' Children's Art Centre provides art programming to foster community interaction, self-expression, and development of skills in the arts through hands-on arts education for children and youth. During the year, the CAC serves over 500 students throughout the agency, local elementary schools, and community classes serving youth in the neighborhood. Over the years, the CAC has brought fine arts and cultural enrichment to everyone in the community regardless of race, ethnic background, or ability to pay.
Activities
USES’ Children’s Art Centre offers a wide range of arts programming, including:
Arts in Early Learning Series, for children ages 2 – 5 years – Weekly one-hour art exploration classes promote early literacy and language acquisition. Units include Uncover & Discover: Sensory Exploration, Rhythm & Rhyme: Creative Movement & Music, Stories & Stage: Dramatic Play.
Studio Arts Curriculum, for children 5 – 12 years —Weekly one-hour art enrichment classes integrates academic concepts and Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks while focusing on self-expression and cultivating critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills. Youth develop skills while increasing their understanding of discipline-specific vocabulary, media, and techniques.
Vacation Arts Program, for children ages 4.5 –12 years - Arts exploration and instruction for full-day programming during February, April, and Summer vacation weeks. Youth explore a variety of visual art projects while participating in additional weekly enrichment activities such as dance, yoga, and theater arts.
Teen Art in the South End, for youth ages 12 – 15 years — In collaboration with Boston Center for the Arts, the CAC offers a wider perspective into the arts. It offers exposure to the arts in the South End community by leading critical discussions at local galleries, museums, and artist studios, as well as conversations with visiting artist workshops.
In-School Residencies — Students from local elementary schools, early childhood education centers and housing developments can receive 8-week or longer residencies taught by USES' bi-lingual teaching artist. Arts activities from our Arts in Early Learning and Studio Arts Curricula are integrated with classroom content and taught alongside classroom teachers and parents, to infuse creativity within the school day or at home to reach multiple types of learners. Arts based methods are an integral part of a child’s learning, so we provide these services at no additional cost. Partners include: Interfaith Housing Development, IBA, Mandela, Families First, Ellis Memorial, Hurley K-8, Josiah Quincy School, Blackstone Elementary School, USES' After School Program, and USES' Early Childhood Education Program.
Community Events -— The Children’s Art Centre takes its programming outside the confines of the building and into the community during the annual Arts in the Park and Family Fun on Rutland events. This component currently reaches about 800 children a year and is designed to foster further engagement in CAC programming.
