USES walking tour participants appreciate art and honor South End women

Participants enjoy a leisurely walking tour through Boston's historic South End

United South End Settlements recently held their second-to-last walking tour of the season on August 30th. Dubbed the "South End Superwomen Walk," the walking tour celebrated the accomplishments of South End women from the mid-nineteenth through the twentieth centuries. Participants in the walk visited sculptures created by women, paid tribute to the South End's immigrant populations, including the African American and Latino communities, and reflected upon the pioneering work of women in hospitals, schools, and settlement houses.

The final USES walk of the season will take place on Monday, September 13th, at 6 p.m. Participants will meet at the Copley Square entrance of the Boston Public Library. The walk will go down the Commonwealth Avenue Mall, allowing the participants to view various statues and learn about their history and to admire examples of 19th century architecture.

USES walking tours are free and open to the general public. They proceed at a leisurely pace, ensuring that people of all ages and abilities can participate, and their duration is 45 minutes to an hour. Well-behaved leashed dogs are welcome, although there is an optional dinner at a local restaurant following the walk, so those interested in dining should not bring dogs. Participation is limited to 20 people, and the walk will be rescheduled in the case of inclement weather. Participants will be notified by email if the walk is canceled.
