Community Classes at USES

USES offers a range of classes for people at all stages of life.

Adult Spanish Classes

Harriet Tubman House

Based on the majority of requests, we are looking to start classes on January 7th and run through February 28th, 2013.  If that does not work we can start at a different date.  Classes will be offered one night a week on Wednesday (we are flexible in regards to other evenings/times if Wednesday does not work for the majority of registrants).  Classes will be taught from 7:00 - 9:00 pm for 8 weeks.  Classes are open to anyone over age 18 who is interested in learning Spanish.

This class will be Beginning 1 Spanish, and is for those who have never taken Spanish or at least have not taken Spanish in several years.  All classes will be taught by a fluent Spanish/English speaker.  The class will cover Spanish beginner conversation/speaking skills, listening, reading, and writing skills.

Beginning 1
  • Alphabet & pronunciation
  • Rules of emphasis
  • Rules for separation of words into different syllables
  • The concept of gender in Spanish
  • Subject pronouns
  • Sentence structure (statements, negations, questions)
  • Question words and formation of questions with question Words
  • Reading and pronunciation
  • Useful vocabulary

Art Making + Wine Benefit Nights!

Adults, join us behind the iron gate from 7 – 8:30 pm for art making, wine, and networking in the heart of the South End! Each session will focus on a new printmaking technique that will expand your creativity in our historic Children’s Art Centre. All proceeds directly support high quality arts education and programming for children and families regardless of ability to pay.

Our workshops are now closed. Please check back in the Fall for our 2013 - 2014 schedule.

Admission: $25 per night
Includes light refreshments, wine and art supplies. Must be 21+ with a valid ID

Currently all of our subsidized spaces in the Summer Arts Program at United South End Settlements’ Children’s Art Centre are FULL. Unfortunately we can only reserve 35% of our spaces for subsidy applicants on a first come first served basis.

Session 1: June 24 - July 5, 2013....................$400 (closed July 4th)
SPECIAL BPS RATE, second week only ........$195 (closed July 4th) - ONLY 1 space remaining for CALDER KIDS

Session 2: July 8 - 19, 2013..............................FULL*

Session 3: July 22 - August 2, 2013.................$450 - ONLY 1 space remaining for PETITE PICASSOS

Siblings receive a 25% discount. For more information please read our Program Information & Policies document at the bottom of the screen.

Terms of Enrollment:
  • Each application must be accompanied by a non-refundable deposit of $100 per child, per session in order to complete your enrollment and secure a spot. This deposit will be applied to the total amount due.
  • Subsidized applicants are also required to pay a non-refundable deposit per child, per session upon enrollment which is determined as half your eligible balance. This deposit will be applied to the total amount due.
  • Acceptance to the program is dependent on available space and the approval of the complete application packet by the Director of Arts & Culture. If for any reason a space is not available, deposit will be refunded in full.

TEEN ART in the South End

Children's Art Centre

Ages 12 – 15 years old

Creative workshops, visits to galleries and time in artist studios! Discover new techniques and create work with professional artists. Pre-registration required.

Our classes at United South End Settlements' Children's Art Centre are currently closed for the Summer. Please check back in the Fall for our 2013 - 2014 schedule.

Beyond the Walls: Public Art
July 22nd - 26th
Take your art practice out of the studio and gallery and onto the BCA plaza.  Learn more about public art and work with other teens to create an outdoor project.

Outside the Lines: Focus on Drawing
July 29th - August 2nd
Immerse yourself into the world of drawing with the BCA’s summer exhibition.  Visit the exhibition, study and practice different ways to use lines.

Wordplay: Text and Image
August 5th - 9th
Blur the lines between poetry, spoken word and the visual world.

Mix-tape: Pop-culture Remixed
August 12th - 16th
Be inspired by hip-hop culture of the late 80s from poetry, rap battles and DJs.
