Children’s classes are held at the Children’s Art Centre, 36 Rutland Street or the South End House, 48 Rutland Street in Boston, as indicated below for each class.
CREATIVE ARTS FOR PRESCHOOLERS Parents and children will explore the world of art and collaborate on painting, sculpture and crafts projects. The room will be set up with three different stations for you and your child to learn and explore at your own pace. Limited 9 per class. Each child must be accompanied by one adult, unless given prior permission. 10 classes Session ONE: Tuesdays

Wednesdays 10:45 – 11:45 am Instructor: Sara Smith is an artist and sculptor who graduated in November, 2004 with a BFA from the Museum of Fine Arts School. Sara has worked for four years as an assistant in a number of preschool classrooms. She has also taught many art fee-for-service classes to kids around the Boston area. Sara loves doing arts and crafts and exploring materials with children of all ages!
MUSIC AND DANCE FOR
PRESCHOOLERS This class incorporates the best of creative play, using fundamental elements of music and dance techniques. Children will learn to use their voices creatively through the use of storytelling, songs, music and props while also learning the discipline and techniques of movement through dance. Limited to 12. Each child must be accompanied by one adult, unless given prior permission. 8 Mondays Instructor: Carrie Schantz graduated from the Boston Conservatory with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Performance. She has over ten years experience teaching ballet, modern dance, and creative movement and is the Founder/Director of the Concord Youth Ballet. On the rare occasion that she is not teaching, she performs for local modern dance companies such as Danny Swain Dancers and Nies Dance.
MY GYM FOR TODDLERS During this structured, age-appropriate, weekly class, toddlers will develop better motor coordination skills. Beginning tumbling, games, puppets, music and group activities will keep these little ones moving! One of the important benefits provided by a My Gym class is the building of confidence and self-esteem. Limited to 12 per class. MY GYM FOR PRESCHOOLERS My Gym kids have fun as they exercise and gain strength, balance, coordination, agility, flexibility and social skills. Listening and comprehension skills improve through structured, challenging activities! Parental involvement is gradually decreased as the child becomes more independent. Limited to 12. Each child must be accompanied by one adult, unless given prior permission.

Instructor: An experienced teacher from the My Gym Newton staff will lead the children through an energetic series of activities utilizing portable elements of the My Gym program.
SPANISH AND CREATIVE MOVEMENT This program, run by 1-2-3 Spanish Together is designed to expose little ones to a new language. During this high-energy class children will sing, dance, play, and enjoy puppet shows in Spanish. They will also play with instruments, parachutes and colorful scarves while listening to Latino rhythms. Limited to 10. Each child must be accompanied by one adult, unless given prior permission.

Instructor: Carolina Gómez-Kramer is a native of Colombia. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages and Education with emphasis in English and Spanish from the Universidad del Valle. Carolina has served as a public elementary school Spanish teacher for the past five years in rural, suburban and urban schools in Massachusetts. She enjoys teaching children her language and exploring the vibrant cultures of Latin America.
CARTOON DRAWING A cartoon is a drawing that says something! In this class children will use their imaginations and interests to tell their own stories through original drawings. They will develop observational skills by starting with simple shapes and expressions, later incorporating background, color, perspective, props, gesture, and the comic strip form. This class encourages each student to use their unique skills as creative artists! Limited to 10.
Thursdays – 8 classes Instructor: Katherine Roy loves drawing, comics, stories and learning new things! She graduated with a degree in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design and works as an illustrator drawing for reading books, greeting cards, and children’s travel books.
YOGA FOR FAMILIES Yoga is a wonderful way to spend time together as a family. Yoga can help everyone feel calm, centered, in control, and in touch with their bodies. This is an imaginative, non-competitive class that will include not only traditional yoga postures, but also games, partnering poses, trust exercises, guided relaxations, and lots of fun! 8
Thursdays (No class 2/21) Instructor: Annabelle Ship is a certified YogaKids and YogaEd instructor. She specializes in imaginative yoga classes for children and teens. She teaches in her studio and in schools in the Greater Boston area. Annabelle spent many years teaching 'cello to children and she also owns an eco-friendly toy store in Newton Highlands.
YOGA FOR KIDS WITH
ADD AND ON THE SPECTRUM How can yoga help your child? Yoga combines physical activity with self-awareness that can help promote a mind-body connection that is often lacking. Yoga helps train your child’s sensory-motor system, and improves spatial awareness by supporting alignment, balance, and coordination. This fun class will give your child techniques and physical poses that he/she can retreat to when feeling out of control or overwhelmed. 8

CREATIVE DRAMA The Creative Drama class will foster an environment that will allow children to create original characters, generate unique stories, and discover new worlds in which to play. Without the limitations of a script or audience, children will use music, props, improvisation and story-telling to create their own imaginative dramatic piece. With inspirations such as favorite childhood stories and fairytales, the group will work to establish elements of creative speech, dialogue and movement. With play and enjoyment being the main focus, children will creatively explore the basic foundations of theatre. 8 Wednesdays Instructor: Chelsea Cipolla is a senior at Emerson College majoring in Theatre Education and Dramatic Arts. Chelsea has taught for over five years in the area of children's theatre, working with children from elementary school through high school. Chelsea is an actress in the Boston area, performing in a vast range of professional theatre.
TEEN PORTFOLIO PROGRAM The Teen Portfolio Program is designed for high school who have a strong interest and talent in visual arts. This course will build technical design skills using professional materials and familiarize students with a wide range of media including painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture. Students will also participate in art exhibitions, visits to galleries, studios, museums and presentations by visiting artists. The class will help each young artist to develop his or her own personal style and guide them through the process of developing a professional portfolio that can be used to apply for art and design colleges. Tuesdays from 4:30 to 7:00 pm throughout the school year Instructors: Emily Stewart is the coordinator of the Children’s Art Centre as well as a working artist with experience in a variety of disciplines including painting, illustration, graphic design and photography. She is a graduate from the Rhode Island School of Design in with a degree in Illustration. Allison is a graduate of the Teen Portfolio Program and is currently enrolled in Massachusetts College of Art and Design, perusing degrees in Photography and Art Education.
