Adult Basic Education Program

"Thanks to USES, I now have my GED and am on my way to college with plans to become a middle-school teacher." Steven

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Adult Basic Education (ABE) is the foundation for developing skills in reading, writing, math, science and social studies. These skills are applied toward demonstrating achievement required to earn a GED certificate or complete the Adult Diploma Program.

Who is eligible for free Adult Basic Education at USES?

ABE is free to Massachusetts residents over the age of 18 without a high school diploma or GED certificate. Our program has a special mission to serve the residents of the South End and Lower Roxbury, but we will serve adults from other cities as well.

What is the GED?

The GED is the General Educational Development test. Students who pass the five-part exam are awarded a high-school equivalency certificate. Our GED program prepares students for the test.

What subjects are studied for GED preparation?

Students study reading, writing, math, social studies and science. Since Computer Literacy is now an essential skill in today’s workplace, computer instruction is integrated into the ABE curriculum as well as employability skills training, and cultural excursions to area museums, civic and historic sites, and theatre productions.

What is the time commitment?

Day classes run from 9:30am to 2:30pm, Monday through Thursday. Evening classes are scheduled from 5:30pm to 8:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Adult Diploma Program

ADP is the Adult Diploma Program of the Boston Public Schools. The ADP is an alternative way for adults to earn a high-school diploma. The program provides credentials to students who can demonstrate various life-skill competencies, as well as pass the MCAS or an equivalent performance portfolio. Classes are offered on Mondays and Wednesdays, 4:30-7:30 pm. Students remain in the program until they have satisfied all requirements for the Adult diploma.

Support Services:

Educational / Career Counseling

Prospective students make an appointment with the Intake Specialist/Educational Counselor before starting the program. They are given tests to determine each student’s academic placement. When space becomes available and the student is enrolled in class, the Counselor is available as a resource for problem-solving and referrals to:

·         Help students identify and achieve their personal, academic and vocational goals.

·         Offer ways to overcome personal and professional obstacles.

·         Provide information and referrals regarding issues such as: childcare, housing, substance abuse, domestic violence, and much more.

·         Support students’ academic goals, ranging from helping children with their homework, to applying to college.

·         Provide guidance in developing a “Life after the GED” plan:

o        Higher Education: How to apply to community colleges and universities, including how to seek financial aid.

o        Employment: Information and referrals on job training programs, job searching and career planning, including resume writing and interview techniques.

Technology Education

Technology education is a key part of Adult Basic Education includes learning basic computer skills as well as learning how to use a computer to search for jobs, do research, and practice academic concepts as part of GED preparation.  The Technology Education program provides access to several state-of-the-art computers, a variety of software applications, and high-speed Internet access. A computer instructor is available to help students use the computers to improve their reading, writing and math skills; learn keyboarding; prepare for the GED; and do Internet research. The center is open to students in the Adult Basic Education Program Monday-Thursday at specified times.

Volunteer Tutors

The ABE classroom experience is greatly enhanced by volunteer tutors and interns. Senior citizens, corporate volunteers, and college students provide classroom assistance and one-one-one tutoring
