SOUTH END CENTER FOR ADULT EDUCATION
Policies and Procedures
LOCATIONS
All classes meet at the Harriet Tubman House at 566 Columbus Avenue,
unless otherwise indicated in the course description. Some classes may
be scheduled at nearby locations. We will attempt to notify you of
location changes.
CHANGES & CANCELLATIONS
The SECAE reserves the right to cancel courses, change times or
locations, and substitute instructors. In the event of inclement
weather, SECAE will be closed if Roxbury Community College is closed.
Check local television stations for reported closings.
LIABILITIES
SECAE exercises great care when selecting instructors. We make no
guarantees, expressed or implied, that classroom instruction will result
in specific gain. We cannot be held responsible for any loss, material
or otherwise, incurred while following an instructor’s directions. SECAE
is not responsible for any personal property left in our buildings.
Students take courses at their own risk. Neither SECAE nor any of its
leaders is liable for any injury you may sustain.
SPECIAL SERVICES
Our buildings are wheelchair accessible. Occasionally we may need to
move classes to an offsite location. While we try to secure
accessibility, we cannot always do so. If you are in a wheelchair please
call the SECAE office at 617-375-8137. We ask that you give us as much
notice as possible.
COURSE CONFIRMATIONS
The SECAE does not send course confirmations.
If you registered by phone, mail, or in person please email awhitaker@uses.org
or call the SECAE office at 617-375-8137 for course confirmation.
SUPPLIES & TEXTBOOKS
Unless otherwise stated, supplies and textbooks are not included in the
course fee. Supply lists are given/sent to students upon registration.
Note: some supplies are not returnable. We recommend you confirm that
your class is running before purchasing supplies.
HOLIDAYS
The SECAE will be closed on most major holidays. Please call 617-375-8137 to confirm if unsure.
REFUNDS (REFUND POLICY – PART 1)
Until the start of your course, refunds are available when:
- The course you are registered for is
cancelled, or the Center initiates a schedule change.
- The course you are registered for is filled
when we receive payment.
After the start of your course, no
refunds are available. Also, if your schedule changes and you cannot
attend your course, no refund is available.
WITHDRAWALS (REFUND POLICY – PART 2)
- If you withdraw from a course and want your
tuition refunded, you must notify the SECAE seven (7) calendar days
prior to the course start date.
- If you withdraw from a course within six (6)
calendar days prior to the course start date, you are eligible for a
transfer credit for one (1) course of equal or less value.
- If you withdraw from a course within six (6)
calendar days after the course start date, you must contact the
SECAE representative and outline the reasons why you wish to drop
the course. At the discretion of the SECAE representative, you will
be granted a transfer credit for one (1) course of equal or less
value.
TRANSFER CREDITS (REFUND POLICY – PART
3)
Transfer Credits can be requested prior to a course’s start date for
most classes; those classes that are not subject to transfer credits are
noted in the course description.
- Transfer credits placed on your account are
good toward any SECAE class for up to one year from the issue date
- Transfer credits cannot be refunded as cash
at any time.
- If you withdraw from a course within six (6)
calendar days prior to the course start date, you are eligible for a
transfer credit.
- If you withdraw from a course within six (6)
calendar days after the course start date, you must contact the
SECAE representative and outline the reasons why you wish to drop
the course. At the discretion of the SECAE representative, you will
be granted a transfer credit for one (1) course of equal or less
value.
- If you request a transfer credit less than 48
hours prior to the course start date, it may be less the value of
any materials fees. Please call our office for details:

FILLED COURSES AND WAITING LISTS
If the course you wish to register for is filled, you will be put on a
wait list. Credit Cards will not be charged and checks will be returned.
If space becomes available, each person on the wait list will be
contacted; the first one to respond will be placed in the course.
Payment will be due at the time of registration.
DISCRIMINATION POLICIES
SECAE welcomes students 18 and over of any race, color, gender, sexual
orientation, religion, nationality, ethnic origin, or disability to all
the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or
made available to students at the Center. Some of our courses are
offered in an environment, which may be dangerous, or which may present
conditions that may be out of our control. Children are permitted to
enroll in class only with the prior consent of the instructor and the
SECAE representative.
