the future. All classes are offered at the Harriet Tubman House, 566 Columbus Ave., unless otherwise noted.
INTRODUCTION TO DECOUPAGE Looking to transform something old into something new? Want to have fun learning the basics while having the opportunity to move on to more advanced techniques? This course will teach students how to laminate cards, pictures and photographs in order to create elegant lampshades, wooden tables, boxes, stools, frames, trays and other household items. We will mix faux painting techniques incorporated with decoupage. No experience necessary Bring to class pre-cut images, paint brushes and your favorite magazine, greeting cards or pictures. 6 Sessions Instructor: Jennifer Sherr is a South End artist recently featured in the Boston Globe’s Sidekick, as well as the South End News. Her work has been exhibited in over 15 stores, including Turtles on Tremont and Uptown Espresso in the South End. Her work has been shown on Martha’s Vineyard and in Boston. To see her collection visit: http://stores.ebay.com/sherr-designs. BEGINNER KNITTING AND CROCHETING – PLAYING WITH YARN If you have always wanted to learn to knit or crochet this class is for you. Or: If you have skills that are rusty and want to get started again. Simple designs will be used. We will start from the very beginning: hook or needle and yarn. Come and share your skills or come and learn new skills. Bring to the first class: size 10 knitting needles or a J size crochet hook and a light colored ball of worsted weight yarn. 8 Sessions Instructor: Trudi Goodman is a self-taught knitter and crocheter who has been knitting and crocheting for over forty years. She hails from a family of tailors, builders and hand artisans. She has designed and made garments for herself as well as others. In the summer of 2005, Ms. Goodman taught knitting and crocheting to over 300 people at the 2005 Boston Knit-Out. In this class students will learn to make and complete a small crazy quilt. A crazy quilt is a quilt that is made without any type of pattern. It is free form. In addition students will learn how to cut fabric the proper way, use a rotary cutter, measure and size quilt blocks, embellish and finish a quilt. Items needed for this class will be provided upon registration. 6 Sessions Instructor: Naomi Henry began quilt making more than 25 years ago. In 1995, Naomi had her first quilting exhibit which turned out to be a great success. She was commissioned by many who saw her work to create a special quilt for them. Naomi believes a quilt should be unique. Of the 150 quilts Naomi has made, not one is a duplicate. WATERCOLOR 1: BEGINNER AND ADVANCED BEGINNER This class will introduce the fundamentals of paint, paper, brushes and techniques. The student may paint in a large or small format from still life, floral or personal subject matter. Materials will be provided if needed for an additional fee. Students are encouraged to bring materials that they own. Instructors will make recommendations on purchases during the course.
6 Sessions Instructor: Anita Turner specializes in watercolor and craft teamwork for adult/child teams. She is employed by the Boston ParkArts Artist-in-Residence program which includes working in Boston City playgrounds including Ringgold Park in the South End as well as their landscape watercolor program. She is a member of the American and New England Societies of Botanical Artists, and Friends of Horticulture at Wellesley College. Instructor: Arlene Greenspan specializes in watercolor, small works on paper, as well as basic principles of drawing and painting. Arlene has served on the boards of Andover Artists Guild, New Hampshire Art Association and she has exhibited her work at the Currier Museum of Art, Essex Art Center, The Whistler House Museum and other venues. CRAFT ACTIVITIES IN THE EARLY EVENING The adult and child team will create an item each week. The focus will be on process and interaction with simple easy to find materials that create a new object of use, fun, or beauty. The class will use materials from nature, household recycled items, and add-on inexpensive items such as buttons, or “google eyes.” The adult should be a parent, relative or friend who values one-on-one time with a child. The child should be ready to use scissors and trace objects (ages 3-6 most likely). 6 Sessions Instructor: Anita Turner (see previous bio) Instructor: Sandra Ruiz Harris was born and raised in Mexico. She has worked over the past five (5) years with toddlers as a pre-school teacher in Mexico. In addition, for the past ten (10) years she has both developed and taught bilingually in craft and technology programs for mixed groups. Ms. Harris who loves sharing stories of language and culture believes that a passion for learning can be transferred through guided play. BEGINNING DRAWING In this course students will build fundamental drawing skills. Instruction will concentrate on the use of lines, shapes, negative spaces, composition, proportion, and perspective. The goal of this class is to help you improve technique, heighten visual awareness, and develop personal expression through individual attention, as well as group discussions. Bring to class soft vine charcoal, compressed charcoal, char-kole black soft pastels, 2B-4B pencils, kneaded eraser, 18”x24” white paper draw pad, chamois cloth, hairspray 8 Sessions Instructor: Karine Kadiyska earned a Bachelor’s degree in painting in 1999 and a Master’s degree in sculpture in 2001, both from Boston University. After completing her graduate studies, she spent two (2) years in Carrara, Italy studying marble carving from local craftsmen. Karine teaches drawing at Brookline Adult and Community Education, and sculpture at Massachusetts College of Art. Her work is in the permanent collection of the New England School of Art and Design at Suffolk University and the Carrara Academy of fine Arts. INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS Never turned on a computer? Don’t know how to use a mouse? Know all that but can’t seem to get beyond the start screen? This class is for you. The course teaches all the computer basics, including turning on your computer, using the mouse, Microsoft Word, browsing the Internet, and using Email. Join us for one of South End Center’s longest running and most popular courses! 6 Sessions Instructor: Cabral Thomas holds a BA in Computer Science from Trinity College. He has taught introductory and intermediate computer courses at the Freedom House in the Dorchester. He also provides technical assistance to small businesses and non-profits. CRASHCOURSE: MICROSOFT WORD Microsoft Word is one of the most popular programs for typing letters, creating flyers and designing cards. In this workshop, you will learn how to enter and edit text, save your documents, and printing options. CRASHCOURSE: MICROSOFT EXCEL Microsoft Excel is a powerful spreadsheet program that can be used to create personal budgets, track finances, and make mass mailings more efficient. In this workshop, you will learn how to enter data, format worksheets, and create time-saving formulas. Students must have keyboard and mouse experience. 1 Session Instructor: Cabral Thomas (see previous bio) CRASHCOURSE: MICROSOFT PUBLISHER Microsoft Publisher is a great design program for the do-it-yourselfer who wants professional looking work without spending too much time. This workshop covers how to choose templates and customize them to your specific project. Students must have a working knowledge of computers and Microsoft Word or similar experience. 1 Session Instructor: Cabral Thomas (see previous bio) CRASHCOURSE: MICROSOFT POWERPOINT Microsoft PowerPoint is a popular program for creating presentations and slide shows. This workshop will introduce you to entering text and pictures, creating slides, and designing a sample presentation. Students must have a working knowledge of computers. 1 Session Instructor: Cabral Thomas (see previous bio) INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOSHOP This class provides an in depth look at the performance aspect of Photoshop tools. During the eight weeks the class will cover all palette and tool box applications while experimenting with mock layouts. This class will also focus on formal design elements, problem solving techniques, and the concepts to create a finished piece of work. 8 Sessions Instructor: Brad Spavin holds an MFA from Massachusetts College of Art. Brad has had recent exhibitions at Curry College, Harvard University, Boston Printmakers, and the New England School of Art. He has taught at Curry College and is currently a sculpture technical advisor at the Museum School. HOW TO CREATE A WEBSITE This class will provide you with easy-to-follow, clear instructions on how to build your own website using HTML. Designed for beginners and those interested in having their own personal website, this class will guide you through the process from beginning to end. You will learn how to link web pages together, add color, text, pictures, and even sound to your website. The students will also learn how to secure a domain name and select a web hosting company. Please note that this class is not designed, nor intended for those seeking to build an e-commerce website. 8 Sessions Instructor: Hiram Scott is an active television producer and director who has years of extensive experience in video production. In addition to producing two cable television shows, he has also collaborated on numerous other productions. Hiram serves as president and founder of the Boston Neighborhood Producer’s Group (BNPG) which is the city’s first and only non-profit advocacy organization that works at getting community members involved in the public access television process. BELLY DANCING FOR BEGINNERS I Learn a sensual ethnic dance, get a fabulous workout, and strengthen and tone muscles. All in one class! Participants should wear a long, full skirt and bring three yards of sheer fabric for a veil. 8 Sessions Instructor: Nacie Graves has taught belly dancing at the YMCA in Quincy, Roxbury, and Boston. Start off with the “Electric Slide” and progress to “Achy Break", "Boot Scoot’n Boogie" and "Tush Push.” Enjoy moving, dancing and laughing while improving your fitness and making new friends. Sneakers and rubber soled shoes are NOT Recommended, leather shoes work best! 8 Sessions Instructor: Nacie Graves (See previous bio) JAZZ DANCE Open level jazz dance class welcomes students of all abilities. Beginners will learn correct posturing and alignment of the body while enjoying a fast-paced introduction to Jazz styles and choreography. Intermediate to seasoned dancers will appreciate unique combinations of techniques, while they focus on strengthening core muscles that will improve more advanced techniques. Jazz Dance sneakers, ballet shoes or non-slippery socks (thicker socks that will not slip on floor), comfortable workout clothes that are fitted. You may prefer to dress in layers for warm-up exercises and dance. 8 Sessions Instructor: Liz Eckhart has a passion for rhythm, choreography and teaching. A fun experience while learning and working out is her priority when teaching. Throughout the years, Liz has one state and regional dance competitions with her dance company. She has previous experience teaching at Jody’s and Jam’Nastics. Liz is currently a Massage Therapist and attends UMASS Boston where she will receive a degree in Psychology with a minor in Jazz Dance in the spring. ITALIAN – Level 1
This course is designed to be a basic introduction to the Italian language and culture. Students will learn fundamental vocabulary, grammar, cultural notes and conversation tips for travel in Italy. Students will be well versed in Italian through interactive class activities, with an emphasis on speaking and listening. 10 Sessions Instructor: Matthew Mollo is an Italian-American who grew up immersed in Italian culture. He has traveled and lived in Italy giving him an intimate knowledge and perspective of the peninsula. Matthew attended the prestigious Universita’ per Stranieri in Perugia where he completed the highest levels of Italian language curriculum, with emphasis on civics, literature and culture. Matthew shares his passion for the Italian language and culture by organizing and leading tours through Italy. American Sign Language is the study of the fundamentals of the language. This course introduces students to the process and structure of ASL to provide understanding of and ability to use the language. Students learn visual/gesture communication, basic information related to deaf culture through expressive signing and receptive comprehension skills. This course is designed for beginners. 10 Sessions Instructor: Sara Vallesteros identifies as a deaf Asian American. Originally from Oahu, Hawaii, Ms. Vallesteros moved to Boston after completing her studies from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). During her tenure at RIT, Sara served as student advisor for the Asian Deaf Club. Sara has worked extensively with deaf elementary students in Hawaii. ARABIC - Level 1 This class will introduce both spoken and written modern standard Arabic. This is the language of education, business, and media throughout the Arabic speaking world. Upon completion of this class, students can expect to be able to introduce themselves, engage in simple conversation about everyday topics, and identify spoken words by parts of speech and parts of sentences. More importantly, students will be able to reveal the mystery of the Arabic alphabet. The teaching method that will be adopted is the communicative approach. (A revolutionary movement in teaching foreign languages) 10 Sessions Instructor: Thamer Amin Mohammad is a native Arabic speaker. He enjoys teaching students the Arabic language and middle-eastern culture and traditions. An engineer by profession, Thamer has taught Arabic and middle eastern culture to high school and adults students. SPANISH – Level 1 This course is designed to help students with minimal or no prior Spanish language experience to develop enough proficiency to communicate in basic real-life situations. This class will introduce students to basic grammatical structures, vocabulary and everyday expressions. Classes will focus on students acquiring basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Some themes will include: greetings/goodbyes, describing oneself, others and things, and talking about likes and dislikes. Please note either Session 1 or Session 2 when registering. Please bring a Spanish-English dictionary to class. SESSION 1 SESSION 2 Instructor: Luis Mendez is a native of Puerto Rico where he taught art to students of all ages. Luis received his Bachelor’s degree in Painting from Pratt Institute in New York, and Spanish for Teaching from Worcester State College. He is certified to teach Spanish, Art and Transitional Bilingual Education. Luis has taught in the public school system and has traveled throughout Europe and South America. SPANISH - Level 2 (Conversational Spanish) This course designed for those who wish to focus on listening comprehension and conversational skills. Students will continue to develop grammatical accuracy in expression and further their understanding of general concepts in listening comprehension. There will be vocabulary building exercises and discussions on everyday topics, as well as a few moderately complex speaking activities 10 Sessions Instructor: Carlos Cruz is a native of Puerto Rico. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the Inter-America University of Puerto Rico. Carlos has studied in Spain and has traveled extensively in different parts of Europe. Carlos is also a part-time Spanish instructor at Berlitz Language School. FRENCH - Level 1 Are you planning a trip to Paris or do you just want to learn to order in a French restaurant? In this class, you will learn basic communication tools in French with food as our focus. You will learn how to find your way when traveling, how to order and pay for food, and how to give compliments so dear to the French! The text for this class is French the Fast and Fun Way by Elizabeth Bourguin Leete. NY: Barrows. 1977 or newer. 8 Sessions Instructor: Maureen Mahany Berger lived for many years in France and has taught ESL and French here and abroad. She is currently pursuing a PhD and teaching French at Boston University. FRENCH - Level 2 Learn the most romantic of the romance languages! French 2 is for those who have completed French 1 or have some knowledge of French and want a refresher course. In this class, we will continue to build pronunciation skills and vocabulary that will help you when traveling or working with French speakers. You will learn how to tell time, give and receive compliments, talk about yourself and your family, and explain your schedule. Some of the grammar points we will cover are numbers, possessive pronouns, the imperative and simple future and past tenses. Prerequisite – French Level 1 10 Sessions Instructor: Maureen Mahany Berger (see previous bio) This class will provide a basic understanding of fundamental Japanese language and culture. Students will learn basic grammar, reading and pronunciation. Each class will focus on a specific topic or subject, such as travel, gardening, city life, Japanese food, etc. Audio visual educational tools will also be used in this class. 8 Sessions Instructor: Yuko Sukai is a native of Japan. She is presently a student at Boston University studying international educational development. Yuko has taught ESL to primary and junior high school students in Japan.
MANDARIN CHINESE Participants in this class will build a foundation in colloquial Mandarin Chinese. Employing a variety of in-class exercises, we will learn to make introductions, ask for directions, order food in a restaurant, and engage in simple conversation. Through these exercises, students will learn about Chinese cultures and cuisines. This class will also introduce written Chinese. 10 Sessions Instructor: DJ Hatfield, PhD has studied Chinese languages and cultures for more than 20 years. A specialist on contemporary popular culture with extensive experience on Taiwan, he is the author of articles appearing in American Ethnologist, Knowledge and Discourse, and Encyclopedia of Popular Music of the World. Comfortable with a wok as well as a computer keyboard, Dr. Hatfield is known for his Taiwanese eggplant and basil. USES ADULT JAZZ GROUP The USES Adult Jazz Group offers a place where adults interested in playing Jazz and Improvising can apply their skills in a fun, interactive environment. Whether you haven’t touched your instrument since high school, or are taking private lessons, this is the perfect setting to play and learn with other musicians. 8 Sessions Instructor: Kyle Crane is a freelance musician and educator. Crane has worked with a variety of artists such as Bill Edwards (Piano World Champions), Bobby Keyes (Jerry Lee Lewis), Sheldon Steele (Bo Diddley, Tavares), and Prentice Pilot (Boston Pops). Crane can be heard playing with groups such as the Boston City Band, The Grownup Noise, Prentice Pilot Jazz Quartet, and many more. Crane teaches private lessons in and around Boston and has taught music at local community theaters. OPENING ALL THE DOORS AND WINDOWS Have you made a New Years resolution to change your life; change your success rate in your career; transform what you don’t like about your life? Take this class and you will get the fresh air and fresh new perspective to make this an even better year than last year! This class will help you develop new coping skills, work through the anxiety, frustration and doubts you may encounter. You will learn new ways to confront and manage those inner and outer critics that stop you from setting and reaching your goals. 8 sessions Instructor: Trudi Goodman is a singer, actor, musician, director and producer with over 30 years of stage and film performance experience throughout the New England area. She develops and teaches Creativity and Self-Empowerment Workshops. Trudi is a playwright, screenwriter, lyricist, and published poet and essayist. Trudi appears as the principal character, Roberta Trett, in the recently filmed production, GONE BABY GONE (Dir. Ben Affleck, Disney/Miramax Pictures), which will be released in Fall 2007. She ahs performed in the 2 recently released independent films: THE DEPARTED (Dir. Martin Scorcese, Warner Bros.) and the CHILD KING (Dir. Frank Kerr, Boston Pictures) PUBLIC SPEAKING: FROM FEARFUL TO FABULOUS! This class will be geared toward group discussion and substantial practice of techniques provided. Students will prepare and deliver four (4) speeches chosen from the most common forms of public speaking; informative, persuasive, impromptu, introductory, and business presentations. Participants should set aside time outside of class to prepare and practice speeches for delivery in the workshop. 8 Sessions Instructor: Cherisa Zaftt holds a Bachelors degree in Public Speaking and Masters Degree in Organizational Management. She currently teaches public speaking for a local college and has taught at the university level. Cherisa has a passion for public speaking, has developed and taught workshops for many organizations in the Boston area, and specializes in communication skills. ADULT BEGIN TO SWIM 1 It’s never too late to learn! This class is for the absolute beginner swimmer. Our instructors will help you become confident in the water and start learning the basics of swimming. Class meets 1 time each week. 8 Sessions Instructor: TBD. This class will be held at the YMCA Central Branch, 316 Huntington Avenue just 3 blocks away from the South End Center. ADULT BEGIN TO SWIM 2 This class is for swimmers who are confident floating with their faces in the water and paddling in shallow water. Learn front crawl basics, other major strokes, and treading water in the deep end. 8 Sessions Instructor: TBD. This class will be held at the YMCA Central Branch, 316 Huntington Avenue just 3 blocks away from the South End Center. ACTING FOR BEGINNERS This class will incorporate the use of short scenes and scene study with one or two characters. We will always use monologues and develop characters from real-life situations. This class will also utilize comedy improvisation and physical movement; development of physical and vocal skills with particular emphasis on self-esteem and stage-fright issues, incorporating the use of Yoga, stress relaxation, Feldenkreis and Alexander techniques. This class will culminate in a mini-production performed by class members displaying acting techniques learned and developed. Students will need to bring to this class a journal book, pens, pencils, highlighter marking pen and a loose leaf 3-ring binder notebook. Feel free to bring a scene or story that you would like to work on in the first class. There will be lots of movement in this class so comfortable, loose clothing would work best. 8 Sessions Instructor: Trudi Goodman (See previous bio) FRIDAY NIGHTS AT THE BCA Friday nights at the BCA is a collaborative initiative between United South End Settlements Center for Adult Education and the Boston Center for the Arts (BCA). This is a great opportunity for participants to meet the cast of two featured plays performed at the BCA. Prior to each performance participants will meet cast members for a brief overview of the play and then attend the performance. The participants will then designate a time to discuss relevant issues and themes that stem from the performance. The cost of $40 includes all four performances, or pay just $10 for a single performance. February 16, 2007
