Brief Description

Camp Hale, which is located on Squam Lake in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, has been providing residential camping experience to approximately 125 boys every summer since 1900.   The basic camping program serves 7 to 14 year old boys utilizing the natural setting of Squam Lake and the White Mountains to provide an alternative environment, opportunity for development, and realization of personal potential within the framework of an enriching experience and reprieve from the stresses of urban livingThese experiences are broken into three parts of the day representing, individual achievement, peer group interaction, and community responsibility. The Leaders in Training program targets 14 to 16 year olds, generally former campers, as potential counselors and prepares them through work, special training sessions and mentor supervised leadership experiences.

Camp Counselors and Staff

Camp Hale is fortunate to have a high number of returning counselors.  The camp also hosts a large number of counselors from outside the United States giving the camp a truly international environment. Instruction is provided in multi-cultural issues, conflict resolution, youth worker training, Life guarding, CPR and first aid.  On-site training conducted by the Camp Hale Director, Assistant Director, Program Director, other USES staff and Squam Lake community members is provided for all counselors and counselors-in-training for a full ten days before camp begins. Another training session is held between camp sessions and focuses on needs identified during the first session, and also covers trip preparation and reconnaissance skills to prepare counselors for leading challenging overnight trips for the older campers. Counselors-in-training participate in two days of training at Camp.

Look up our history in the Camp Hale Book entitled Camp Hale, A Century of Camping as well as songs from the campers and alumni in the accompanying CD Camp Hale, A Century of Songs available from the camp Hale office at the United South End Settlements’ Harriet Tubman House.

Camp Hale maintains a very strong relationship with its neighbors and a strong Alumni Association (including men who attended Camp in the ‘30’s, ‘40’s, and ‘50’s).

ONE-2-WIN Mentoring Program

Camp Hale’s new male mentoring initiative is named “One-2-Win”; it is a one on one mentoring partnership that matches an adult (former or current Camp Haler or friend of camp) with a current camper.

The program entails a dedication on the part of the mentor volunteer of a minimum of ONE-HOUR PER WEEK to be spent with the mentee.

A mentor provides support to a young person who can benefit from the guidance, friendship and life experiences of the mentor. Mentoring gives mentors and mentees time to share these experiences and learn from them while building a supportive relationship over time.

The most important aspect of the mentoring One Two Win is to achieve a close bond between a young person and an adult. This can be achieved in a myriad of ways ranging from a trip to the Museum of Science, Shooting hoops in the Blackstone Gym, Designing a Business/Calling card at the United South End Settlements’ Technology Center, Planning a meal and shopping at the Haymarket Farmers Market, and even practicing the answers to the questions on the Massachusetts Drivers Exam.  In short, the “One Two Win” coordinator can assist you in predetermining mentoring activities, however it is also a good idea to ask the youth what he may like to do.
